Bolton's Jardel to miss out on Old Trafford debut

MANCHESTER (Reuters) - Mario Jardel has been told he will not make his Bolton Wanderers debut at Manchester United on Saturday, despite claiming he is fit enough to play after passing his medical.

The Brazilian striker, who signed for Bolton in a 1.5-million-pound deal from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday, has not trained or taken part in any pre-season warm-ups.

He has been forced to return to Portugal to fill out paperwork so he can register for the premier league side and will not return to England until Friday night.

"It doesn't matter what a great goal scorer he is. If he isn't fit he won't be much use to us," Bolton manager Sam Allardyce told reporters on Thursday.

"He thinks he can play 90 minutes against United but I don't agree with him. He has had no pre-season games or even training."

Allardyce added in a statement on the club's website: "His overall condition is not great, but he will improve with the right training methods."

Jardel was the leading scorer in Europe two years ago when he scored 41 times but only managed 11 goals last season.

The 29-year-old left the Portuguese club under a cloud after spending time at home in Brazil last season due to depression following marriage problems.

Allardyce believes Jardel will not have similar problems at Bolton after lengthy talks with the player.

"I have met him and his wife. They are together and I think his problems are behind him," he added.

"I have said for ages the club need a goal-scorer to take us to the next level where we are thinking about more than just survival. His goal scoring record is second to none."
