Saint Petersburg, who were just one point behind Spartak before Saturday's matches dropped back to fourth after suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of hosts Torpedo.

Former Spartak forward Alexander Shirko, who joined Torpedo last month, opened the score three minutes ater the kick-off then his Yugoslav teammate Nicola Jolovic increased Torpedo's advantage just four minutes later.

Saint Petersburg immediately reduced the hosts lead with a goal from Sergei Osipov but Torpedo's Vladimir Leonchenko restored the two-goal advantage with a well-taken penalty.

Alexander Gorshkov scored again for Saint Petersburg after the break but the visitors failed to equalise despite their late rally.
