First Team Match Report
20th September 2001 - IPSWICH TOWN 1, TORPEDO MOSCOW 1

A goal five minutes from time by Ipswich-born Titus Bramble preserved Town's unbeaten record in European competition.

Despite throwing everything at the Russians of Torpedo Moscow, the visitors looked set to take a first leg lead thanks to Dmitry Vyasmikin's early goal.

Town started brightly and Bramble almost met a Jermaine Wright corner early on before Matteo Sereni gathered the ball at the feet of Alexander Shirko as he followed up a Sergiy Kormyltsev shot.

Roman Berezovsky in the Moscow goal made a good save to deny Marcus Stewart before the visitors took a shock lead after a mistake by Bramble.

His loose ball was snapped up in midfield and pushed forward to Shirko. His perfectly weighted pass freed Vyasmikin who shot low through the legs of Sereni.

Findii George fired over the bar after the 'keeper dropped a high ball but a foul had been given before Pablo Counago, in his first start, went close twice with a shot the 'keeper saved and a header not far wide.

Torpedo were playing on the break but they created another good chance for Kormylysev whose low shot was well held by the diving Sereni.

Town were awarded a penalty after 36 minutes for a slight pull on Counago's shirt by Aliaksandr Lukhvich, but Stewart dragged his shot wide of the post.

Ipswich kept their heads up and almost scored a minute later when Counago's flicked header from a Jim Magilton free-kick came back off the bar.

Counago then had a header stopped on the line before Magilton volleyed over as Town ended the half on top but unable to find a way through.

At the interval, manager George Burley brought on Jamie Clapham for John McGreal and Town continued to press, Bramble heading a Wright corner over.

Clapham shot wide from the edge of the box before Hermann Hreidarsson twice pulled off good blocks to deny Konstantin Zyryanov and Shirko in quick succession.

Richard Naylor came on for Counago and soon after George blazed over after Magilton found him in a good position 25 yards out.

Torpedo had what would have been a crucial second goal disallowed after 68 minutes, with Vyasmikin ruled offside as he followed up Shirko's shot after Sereni could only parry it.

Martijn Reuser was introduced for Chris Makin and this sparked an increase in the Ipswich pressure.

Naylor fired wide from a George cross before Magilton shot at the 'keeper, who then produced a tremendous save to turn away George's glancing header from a Clapham cross.

There was controversy on 78 minutes when George's header from a Reuser free-kick looked to be dropped behind the line by Berezovsky, but it wasn't given.

Naylor shot tamely at the 'keeper before Shirko missed a good chance at the other end, moments before being substituted.

It looked as if it wasn't going to be Town's day until a deep free-kick was laid back by George for Bramble to fire home a low left-foot shot.

The Blues could even have gone on and won the tie with Clapham having a shot deflected onto the post before Naylor followed up and clipped the loose ball against the crossbar.

There was still time for Stewart to curl one effort wide and just fail to connect with a Reuser cross a couple of yards out before Holland dragged an effort wide from a good position and George shot at the 'keeper.

Afterwards, George Burley said: "I said before the tie that nothing would be decided tonight and that's exactly the way it is. We started brightly but then gave away a bad goal, which has been the story of our season.

"It gave us an uphill task but we kept at it and in the second half we threw everything at them. We created numerous chances and got a deserved equaliser.

"It's very tough for us and I would say Torpedo Moscow are favourites now. We had a great away record last season though and I feel we can go there and win," said Burley.
